Queen Elizabeth has passed away

Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain is dead.

This is announced by the British court in a statement on Thursday evening.

She was 96 years old and has sat on the throne for over 70 years.

She was traveling in Kenya when, on February 6, 1952, she received the news that she had become queen, after the king had died during the night.

However, the official coronation did not take place until June 1953.

Prince Charles now takes over the throne and immediately becomes King of Great Britain.

His wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, becomes Queen Consort.

Earlier on Thursday, the British court issued a statement that the Queen's doctors were concerned about her health and that the Queen was therefore under medical supervision at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

"London stands still - a country in shock"

More and more people gather during Thursday evening outside Buckingham Palace in central London to honor the late Queen Elizabeth II.

- I'm standing outside Buckingham Palace and people are arriving in a calm but steady stream.

People look up at the castle and gates.

It's a sad mood.

London is not completely still, but more still than the city usually does on a normal Thursday night.

It is in many ways a country in shock, says Katrin Marcal, DN journalist living in London for many years, in SVT's Aktuellt.

Buckingham Palace announced at 7:30 p.m. Swedish time that the Queen had died quietly at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

She lived to be 96 years old.

Earlier in the day, the British court announced that the Queen's doctors were concerned about her health and that she was under medical supervision.

The royal family is now gathered at the castle and is expected to return to London on Friday.

Prince Charles takes over the throne and is now King Charles III.

His wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, becomes Queen Consort.

"It is a moment of greatest sadness," Charles said in a statement about the Queen's death.

In June this year, Britain celebrated the 96-year-old Queen's 70 years on the British throne.

No other British monarch has reigned as long.

Elizabeth was traveling in Kenya when, on February 6, 1952, she received the news that she had become queen, after the king had died during the night.

However, the official coronation did not take place until June 1953.

Queen Elizabeth received Liz Truss as the new British Prime Minister at her summer residence Balmoral in Scotland earlier this week.

It is also where she is now being kept under medical supervision.
