It is with sadness that the Swedish royal family on Thursday received the news that Queen Elizabeth II has passed away.

The royal family in Sweden is related to the royal family in Great Britain through Queen Victoria, who was King Carl XVI Gustaf's great-grandmother.

“The Queen served her countries and the Commonwealth with an outstanding dedication and sense of duty.

She has been a constant presence, not only in British society but internationally.

In addition, she has always been a good friend to my family and a link to our shared family history," says Carl XVI Gustaf in the statement.

"We offer our condolences to the Queen's family and to her people".

The Swedish royal couple also visited Great Britain at the end of May just before Queen Elizabeth II's platinum jubilee began - but without meeting the jubilant monarch.
