The makers of the British series "The Crown", produced by Netflix, announced today, Friday, that they will stop filming the series out of respect for the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

A source on Netflix confirmed to the Associated Press that "as a sign of respect", filming for the sixth season of the series being produced has been suspended, and will also be suspended on the day of the Queen's funeral.

This decision was taken hours after the death of the world's oldest queen, Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Britain, at the age of 96, and a rule that spanned more than 70 years. She ascended the throne in 1952, and she died yesterday, Thursday, the eighth of September, surrounded by her family. At Balmoral Palace, in the Scottish Highlands, the family said Thursday, she will be succeeded by her eldest son, King Charles III.

The death of Elizabeth II comes before the presentation of the fifth season of the series "The Crown", which is scheduled to be shown for the first time next November, and includes a new cast, as Imelda Staunton will play the role of Queen Elizabeth, and Jonathan Price will play the role of Prince Philip, and Dominic West will play The role of Prince Charles, Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana, Olivia Williams was cast as Camilla Parker Bowles, and Jonny Lee Miller will appear as Prime Minister John Major.

The fifth season will focus on the life of the British royal family in the 1990s, and the death of Princess Diana in 1997.

The sixth and final season, whose filming has been suspended, will feature 16-year-old Rufus Kampa as Prince Harry, and 21-year-old Ed McPhee as Prince William, indicating that the season will reveal the effects of Diana's death and the lives of the boys in the early 2000s.

Did the Queen like the series?

Although the late Queen has not spoken publicly about the series, in 2017 the Sunday Express reported that the Queen had watched all 10 episodes of season one with Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, Duchess of Wessex, who organized a viewing night for Her Majesty.

A senior royal source said: "Edward and Sophie love the Crown, it was an arrangement for them to drive to Windsor Castle to join the Queen for a casual dinner while watching TV; they have a Netflix account and encouraged her to watch the series with them. Luckily, she really loved it, though It was clear that there were some pictures of the events that I found very dramatic."

The Queen's opinion changes with the next season

With the following seasons, her view of the series allegedly became progressively worse.

When it came to season two, she was reportedly not a fan of how her husband Prince Philip was shown to be unsympathetic to the unhappy young Prince Charles at his boarding school.

"The Queen is aware that many who watch The Crown are an accurate depiction of the royal family, and that she cannot change that," a senior royal told the British newspaper, Daily Express. "But I can tell she was upset by the way in which Prince Philip is portrayed as a father insensitive to his son's welfare. She was particularly disturbed by a scene in which Philip had no sympathy for Charles on his way home from Scotland, because it simply did not happen."

The royal family is not complicit

In September 2019, the Queen's Communications Secretary Donal McCabe sent a stern statement to the Guardian, months before the third season premiere, about the family's view of the show's dramatic events, stressing that "the royal family has never agreed to examine or approve the series' content." She did not ask to know what topics will be included, and she will never express an opinion regarding the accuracy of the series.” In his statement, McCabe asked viewers to “be aware that the royal family is not complicit in the interpretations and tales presented by the series.”

It is worth noting that the series has achieved tremendous critical and public success, so that it is ranked 105th in the list of the 250 best television series in the history of drama, according to the technical website "IMDB", and has achieved 21 Emmy Awards so far, and co-starred in it.
