7:14 am: Xi Jinping joins the condolences that fuse around the world

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday offered his "sincere condolences" to the United Kingdom following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, which he described as "a great loss for the British people", according to state media.

"On behalf of the Chinese government and people as well as in his own name, Xi Jinping expressed his deep condolences" in a message sent to the new King Charles III, said public television CCTV.

“He sends his heartfelt condolences to the British Royal Family, government and people.

7:01 am: Tribute to Elisabeth II at the opening of the Toronto festival

The Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff) opened Thursday in a dark atmosphere, with the extinction of the illuminated signs of cinemas to mark the disappearance of Queen Elizabeth II, before the screening of a drama around Syrian refugees .

The festival cinemas, Princess of Wales and Royal Alexandra, named after members of the British royal family, turned off their signs as news of Elizabeth II's death spread.

“As we come together to celebrate the ability of cinema to move us and illuminate the world (…) our thoughts go out to all those who, here and around the world, mourn its passing”, declared the director of the biggest festival in North America, Cameron Bailey.
