A new scientific study has warned of the negative effects of sleeping for long hours during the weekend, which may make a person feel lethargic and unfocused throughout the day, and this effect may even last for several days.

Neuroscientists at Western University in Ontario, Canada, conducted this study and concluded that the optimal amount of sleep for logical thinking, concentration, and activity ranges between 7.16 and 7.38 hours, and that getting less than 7 hours of sleep negatively affected the participants’ performance in the test.

Scientists also found that sleeping an additional two hours was linked to decreased cognitive performance and increased feelings of lethargy and inactivity.

The study included 10,000 participants who recorded their typical sleep patterns, then underwent a cognitive test to evaluate concentration and short-term memory, and other tests to evaluate the extent of their activity.

Most previous studies have focused on the consequences of lack of sleep, or insomnia, but there are very few studies that have examined the bad effects of excessive sleep.

A French study - conducted in 2016 - previously indicated that sleeping for more than 10 hours a day may cause some mental illnesses, obesity and a high body mass index.
