What is body shaming and how to defend yourself against it

Although each

birth

is different, almost all of them agree on something: its spectacular nature.

A baby's enormous head first and her entire body later (although that is the least of it) have to come out through the narrow birth canal.

A

vagina

dilates

an average of

10 centimeters

in a conventional birth, but even so the child does not have it easy

.

Coming out of a womb has its problems, especially when, as we usually do in the West, they make it difficult for us.

The process, with or without episiotomy, leaves its consequences on the female body.

Sequelae that, under normal circumstances, the body knows perfectly how to counteract.

To do this, fundamentally, use one tool: time.

There is no agreement here either.

It can take

up to six months

for

internal organs

to return 'to their place'.

The

pelvic floor

also has to recover, and it can take up to twice as long.

That does not mean at all that for a year you will feel bad.

In general terms, you will make your life and your body will make its own, so to speak.

Four to six weeks after giving birth, if you feel like it, you can

have

penetrative

sex

.

A very suffering vagina

For obvious reasons, the

vagina

is one of the organs most affected by childbirth.

It can lose its elasticity, tension capacity and lubrication due to hormonal changes, with consequent discomfort, ranging from vaginal dryness to pain during sexual intercourse.

To counteract these effects, there is a new treatment that promises to "make your vagina the same again without suffering pain or discomfort and in just one week."

It's called

medical laser vaginal tightening.

Gynecologist

Irene Martínez,

from ENEA Clínica, is an expert in this method indicated for those patients who,

after the postpartum period (6-8 weeks),

present symptoms such as

urinary incontinence with exertion, vaginal hypermobility, decreased pleasure with intercourse

or

dryness .

vaginal.

Since 'laser tightening' is not an entirely friendly expression, we asked the gynecologist what exactly the method entails.

"Laser vaginal tightening consists of

heating the vaginal tissue,

which triggers the production of collagen, elastin and neovascularization. This results in an improvement of the tissue. The

vagina

is

less lax

and has

more lubrication capacity."

Why does this benefit the reproductive system? It will improve vaginal laxity, which will help increase sensations during sexual relations and therefore pleasure.

Additionally, by stimulating the formation of collagen and elastin, it improves vaginal tissue and consequently will reduce vaginal dryness.

It can also help treat mild urinary incontinence by improving the tone of the pelvic floor muscles.

How much time is spent on the intervention? The procedure lasts approximately 30 minutes.

It will depend on the type of laser used and the needs of each patient.

Is anesthesia used? No.

It is a painless treatment, generally very well tolerated by patients.

After the laser vaginal tightening procedure, explains Irene Martínez, it is possible to experience

mild discomfort

such as

burning, itching

or

a sensation of dysuria

[burning or discomfort when urinating].

But, he adds, "these discomforts are temporary, they can last one or two days, but it will depend on the sensitivity of each patient and the extent of the treatment. In most cases they do not interfere with the patients' daily activities, which can lead a normal life."

As for the number of sessions, it will depend, the expert explains, on the needs of each patient "and the specific protocol used by the doctor."

In general, she says, it is suggested to do several, once a month.

Discomfort after childbirth is inevitable.

From what moment, with what consequences, should a woman consider undergoing an intervention like this? The postpartum period will be different for each patient depending on the type of birth experienced and, therefore, the consequences will vary in intensity and in duration.

After childbirth or cesarean section, some women may experience vaginal laxity, urinary incontinence, vaginal dryness, pain with sexual intercourse, or loss or decreased pleasure.

If these symptoms exceed six to eight weeks postpartum and especially if they affect her quality of life, it is time to consider visiting a specialist.

For years we have normalized these symptoms and assumed that they were irreversible consequences after childbirth and that is not the case.

Thanks to vaginal laser procedures, a reduction in symptoms can be achieved and, therefore, an improvement in the quality of life of our patients.

Although the gynecologist prefers not to provide us with prices, a scan of the Internet shows us that the range for this type of intervention is large, with a minimum price of 350 euros per session.
