His favorite quote:

No word, no message.

Just the song, which spoke volumes.

Why this book?

  • Because it's a beautiful love story

that transcends the passage of time and everyday life.

Because there is something painful and beautiful in these feelings which, despite the decades, have not disappeared.

It is a novel that speaks of passion, sensuality and emotions, but also of the pragmatism of marriage, of a life spent together and of what remains after thirty years of everyday life, after the children.

Love in all its forms, in short.

  • Because this novel is a real ode to the music

that accompanies the important moments of our lives, the music that becomes a vector of communication and emotional support... This novel is even more appreciated in music and the author gives us many avenues to explore.

  • Because it is a powerful and rough novel,

which does not spare its characters.

These are terribly endearing, and admirably built: we have a heavy heart for them, in 1979 until 2012.

  • Because it's a universal novel

about first love, the one that overturns certainties and sweeps away everything in its path.

It's a book that sounds true, powerful and strong, and which magnifies feelings and sensations that we have all known one day.

It's brilliant to portray with such talent the famous "what could have been".

The basic project is already great: but on top of that, the execution is admirable!

The essentials in 2 minutes

The plot.

In 1979, in Sheffield, a boy and a girl are in love.

Classic.

But the girl disappears overnight.

Thirty years later, the boy-turned-man tracks down the girl on Twitter.

He sends her the link to a song... an act that will upset all their certainties.

Characters.

She is Alison.

He is Daniel.

She comes from a difficult environment, alcoholic mother, absent father.

He comes from a privileged family cocoon.

They meet on the bus and this is the beginning of an incendiary love story.

Places.

This novel takes us to Sheffield in England, but also to Australia where Alison finally built her life and to Scotland, where Daniel built his.

The time.

The novel alternates between the end of the 70s and the flamboyant youth of the characters, and 2012 when, having become adults and calm, they decide in spite of themselves to look back...

The author.

Jane Sanderson has already written five novels but Lovesong is the first to be translated in France.

This book was read with

great empathy for the characters, eminently touching.
