Prince Charles became King of Britain this evening, following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away at the age of 96, after a seven-decade rule.

The 73-year-old Prince of Wales is the rightful heir to the British throne as the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II.

Charles has been the legal heir, Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Rothesay since 1952, and accordingly, he is the oldest and oldest legal heir in British history.

 The current king is also the oldest legitimate heir to the position of Prince of Wales, when he took office in July 1958.
