On the 10th, 22 years after the training ship "Ehime Maru" of Uwajima Fisheries High School in Ehime Prefecture was hit by a U.S. nuclear submarine off the coast of Hawaii and sank, 9 people including students died. A memorial service was held, and bereaved families and students mourned the victims.

On February 10, 2001, Uwajima Suisan High School's training ship "Ehime Maru" was hit by an American nuclear submarine off the coast of Hawaii and sank, killing a total of nine students, teachers and crew members.

On the 10th, the 22nd year, a memorial service was held at the high school attended by bereaved families and students, and at 8:43 am when the accident occurred, a bell taken out of the sunken hull was rung to offer a moment of silence.

Principal Naotaka Takemiya then read out the names of each of the nine victims, saying, "Even now, 22 years later, the great resentment and deep sorrow of the bereaved families and victims still cannot be healed. Their lives were taken halfway. When I think about the disappointment of this accident, I strongly believe that the accident should not be forgotten."

The attendees offered white chrysanthemums on the wreath stand and quietly offered their prayers.

Kota Toyoshima, a second-year student in the fisheries breeding department and student council president, said, "When I learned that someone of our generation had died in an accident, I felt so sad that I couldn't think of it as a single thing. I would like to take over the memory firmly to us," he said.
