The coronavirus had already caused the premature end of the Nice Carnival and the Lemon Festival in Menton. It is now the turn of the Nice Fair and Cannes Mipim to be impacted.
Scheduled from March 7 to 16, the 76th edition of the Fair of Nice will not take place. The mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi announced his cancellation on Saturday, in agreement with the prefecture of the Alpes-Maritimes.
“A few days ago, we were hoping to be able to open this event awaited by the people of Nice and the 100,000 visitors who frequent it. Like all of us, we are observing the very rapid development of the health situation in France, ”commented Marc Ippolito, president of the organizing association Nicexpo.
This decision came before the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, announced his decision to cancel "all the gatherings of more than 5,000 people in confined spaces".
500 exhibitors were expected at the Nice Fair. Around 60,000 quotes and contracts were to be signed during and after the event, generating 28 million euros in turnover.
Nicexpo, for its part, will have to deal with deadweight losses, as insurance does not cover epidemics.
Change of plan for Mipim
Again on Friday, Reed Midem promised that the International Market for Real Estate Professionals (Mipim) in Cannes would be held "as planned" from March 10 to 13, at the Palais des Festivals. The organizer of this flagship event in the sector finally decided to postpone the event from June 2 to 5, 2020, through the voice of its president Paul Zilk, arguing "the evolution of the context".
“It is not a decision that we take easily. We believe that these new dates will give the international community of Mipim the opportunity to achieve its business objectives, ”added the manager.
With more than 25,000 participants last year, Mipim is an even more important event for Cannes than the Film Festival in May.
