Honorary citizens are awarded every year to people who have contributed to the development of Tokyo, and the city has selected three candidates for this year in a selection committee made up of academic experts.
Among them, Ryoko Akamatsu (89), a former Minister of Education, and a resident of Minato-ku, served as the representative director of a general incorporated foundation to increase the number of women members and leaders in the Diet and local councils to improve the social status of women. Takao Saito (82), a playwright and a resident of Nakano-ku, has attracted many readers from generation to generation, including serializing the popular drama “Golgo 13” for over 50 years.
Mr. Issei Miyake (81), a designer who lives in Shibuya Ward, said that his reason for selection is that he continues to make innovative clothes, such as cutting out clothes from a piece of cloth.
The city will make proposals to the regular meeting of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly next month and formally recognize the three as honorary citizens with the consent of the Congress.
