For the second time in less than a year, we have a film about the wives of gangsters who turn to crime after their husbands are deported. The first film was "Widows" by English director Steve McQueen. We do not need to make a comparison because they oppress the widows, who are much better than the bad kitchen.

The Kitchen is adapted from comics with the same title, published by DC-owned Vertigo. The film is based on the current political conditions that Hollywood wants to promote: empowering women and strengthening their role in society, even if they follow the path of criminality. It is important to mix papers and give a role that has always been for men since the dawn of cinema for women.

In 1978 in New York, Cathy (Melissa McCarthy) is a mother of two, along with her husband Jimmy (Brian James), a member of an Irish gang. Claire (Elizabeth Moss) with her husband Rob (Jeremy Robb) scum who beats her, and does not appreciate her presence in his life.

Robbie (Tiffany Hadish) is married to Kevin (James Bagle Dale), the leader of the Irish gang in the Hills Kitchen area. After the departure of Kevin's father, who ran the gang, his mother Helen (Margot Martindale) did not lose the respect she had received in her area, but Helen was unhappy with her son's marriage to a black woman, and she was not ashamed to express her rejection.

The men are sentenced to three years in prison for stealing a liquor store and assaulting two security men. Wives find themselves in trouble, because the money they get from organized crime leader Mike Whitford, nicknamed Little Jackie, is not enough to pay their rent.

Little Jackie, by the way, a nervous, elegant and incompetent clown, continues to collect money under the name of “protection” from his area merchants who are tired of his incompetence, especially as the crime spreads more and harms them than they have paid him.

Assassins without booting

Wives seize the first opportunity to replace themselves in their former husbands' positions, begin the collection process, and protect their merchants, with the help of some men who are loyal to their husbands.

Without seeing a prelude to the next stage, not in the form of a quick montage, not even by writing "at least three months later" on the screen, suddenly we see Kathy, Claire and Robbie sniff their guns at the merchants and accumulate money, and learn to chop the bodies before putting the parts in garbage bags and throw them in the river.

It's as easy as eating popcorn in a cinema! If you find that it does not enter your mind you do not have to forgive the film, even if you know that it is adapted from comic stories! Even Captain America and his fellow superheroes are quoted from comics, but they are more convincing than The Kitchen nonsense!

Gabriel (Donal Gleason), a soldier returning from Vietnam, is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which went west - the western United States - for a while and returned to New York for a specific mission. Gabriel's first appearance on the screen suddenly happened without any introduction. It was filmed and presented as if we knew the man, and we did not even grasp the speed of his entry, which undermined a powerful and moving scene that was about to happen.

First experience

Director Andrea Berlov, who has written several films and co-wrote Straight Outta Campton in 2015, is in her first directorial experience, failing from the first half an hour, because of her urgency in writing and directing together.

Perlov had two options in the artistic vision: either the rapid development of events, rapid shocks and extreme violence, the style of storyboard that I chose for the film, or resort to the style of natural drama, which requires a convincing and psychological preparation because it simulates the phases of public life, and because the characters are human and not cartoons!

In seeing Berloff the bullets flying, causing blood to bleed as water sprinklers, the three women are turning into criminals in the blink of an eye, and any humane necessary for such a drama disappears, to the point that we are not interested in who lives and who dies, because they are all murderers in cold blood. In other words, we have three characters who have gone from nothing to criminal in exactly the same way, and there is no difference between them! Isn't that boring ?!

"I built all this or where we are," Cathy replied, as many times as the phrase in the Gulf soap operas was the saddest of the film. For example, veteran American director Martin Scorsese used this sentence in his fascinating film Casino (1995), in the final scene when Sam (Robert Dinero) saw his empire demolished and decided to rebuild it, three hours after that epic, not less than Half that time in Perlov proceeded!

Another example, Walter White says that sentence in the wonderful series Breaking Bad after more than 50 episodes, aired in six years, during which the world watched how he built his empire with interesting details, which is why he was very convincing, not as Berloff does.

Berloff's debates are poor and incoherent, and she doesn't know how and when to use the character's reaction shot. The viewer's tone is unbalanced and unstable. Either the scene ends quickly, or he spends a long time in dialogues that cause exhaustion. It was as if the film suffered many interventions by people who wanted to put it in order to get rid of it and proceed with another project.

Surprise .. this mess

McCarthy is unconvincing after her beautiful performance in "Can You Forgive Me," amazed from blundering to another in a grueling performance of the soul, the only somewhat capable moose.

At the end of the film, there is a cheap surprise we have seen dozens of times, the surprise is exactly as if a friend tells you a story, and when it ends it tells you that it was a lie from the ground up, and your mistake that you believe it.

Characters turned from nothing to criminal in exactly the same way, and there is no difference between them! Isn't that boring ?!
