The actor Jean-Pierre Marielle, unforgettable interpreter of Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe in "Every morning of the world" (1991) and great figure of the cinema and the French theater, died Wednesday at the age of 87, announced his family.

" Agathe Marielle is sad to announce that her husband, the actor Jean-Pierre Marielle, died April 24 at 16:24, at the hospital of Four Towns in Saint-Cloud after a long illness. The funeral will be held in the strictest intimacy, "said his wife in a statement.

An unforgettable cavernous and pouty voice, one of those male figures you imagine will make fun of the world in Parisian bars. Hexagonal film library all his own, embodying a popular France, Jean-Pierre Marielle has played in more than one hundred films, comic and tragic, author and general public, and countless plays and TV movies.

One of his most famous film roles was that of Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe in Alain Corneau's "Every Morning in the World" (1991). " I have been in all genres with people who are very good ," he said with the humor of the one who, disillusioned, claimed to have returned from everything and everyone ... Except pretty women, as he shows it so well in the tragicomedy "Les Galettes de Pont-Aven" by Joël Séria (1975).

Tall, broad shoulders, mustache provided, salt and pepper beard, ironic look, sarcastic, he liked to play the dirty people, the handsome beasts and wicked, cynical. " For an actor, it's not very interesting to play a nice guy. Instability, trouble are much richer, "he explained.

"Do you like being pissed at you? Not me ".

He was seven times nominated to the Caesar without winning a single one. But to get nothing in the " television agricultural shows " was indifferent to him, he said: " The Caesar? I do not give a damn! However, he will be rewarded with television (7 of 1993 best actor for "The controversy of Valladolid", according to Jean-Claude Carrière) and at the theater (Molière 1994 of the comedian for "Le retour" d Harold Pinter).

Admitting to have sometimes played in films and very "forgettable" pieces, he cultivated the squeaky humor and intimidated his interlocutors with a laugh and an ogre voice that allowed him to justify his rough character: " You like that you fuck, you? Not me .

Born in Paris on April 12th, 1932, this Burgundian son of an industrialist of the agribusiness and a seamstress mother, who will grow up in Dijon, is directed towards the theater by his professor of letters. Released from the Conservatoire de Paris in the same batch as Jean-Paul Belmondo, Bruno Cremer, Claude Rich, Françoise Fabian and Jean Rochefort, the friend of a lifetime, he won his first role in "The forced marriage" (Molière) in 1953.

"I do not have much to say and I do not know how to say it"

Trainee at the Comédie-française, he began a career in light theater, cabaret with Guy Bedos. He forgets the cinema. The New Wave does not know it: it is then cataloged actor burlesque and boulevard. However, with Claude Régy, Delphine Seyrig and Jean Rochefort, he will help popularize Anglo-Saxon authors such as Edward Albee and Harold Pinter in France. And, if he appears in boulevard comedies, he also plays, from the 1960s to the 2000s, Claudel, Chekhov or Pirandello.

In cinema, after shy beginnings in 1960, he has to wait a decade and a good twenty roles before getting noticed. It is from 1969 that its most consistent characters arrive. We see it in Philippe de Broca's "The devil by the tail", Claude Berri's "Sex-shop", Georges Lautner's "The suitcase" or Michel Audiard's "How to succeed when one is con and whiny".

Follows an intense activity in front of the cameras. He continues (as in 1976, for example) up to five films a year, directed by Blier, Labro, Molinaro, Mocky, Sautet, Tavernier, Miller and others. To his repertoire: "Let the party begin", "Dupont Lajoie", "The imprecator", "Coup de Torchon", "Formal wear", "Uranus", "One, two, three, sun", "The Little Lili "," The Gray Souls, "etc.

Modest, he loved to break the myth of the vocation of the great actor: " I am not sensitive to the smell of makeup sponges or the dust behind the scenes. I am only a defensive amateur. I have never taken anything seriously, I do not have much to say and I do not know how to say it . Discreet about her private life - married to actress Agathe Natanson, he had a son from a previous marriage - he loved biking, jazz and New York.
