Director of the Public Transport Systems Department at the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai, Khaled Al-Awadi, revealed that the authority intends to operate five self-driving (cruise) vehicles experimentally, during a period not exceeding the end of this year, adding that the authority is in the process of preparing high-resolution geographical maps, which are required to operate Smart vehicles in the Business Bay and Downtown areas, to be added to the Jumeirah 1 area, where mapping has been completed since last July.

Al-Awadi told "Emirates Today", during his attendance at the GITEX 2022 exhibition, that the authority had brought in a self-driving vehicle to display it within its pavilion in "GITEX", with four other vehicles joining it to be piloted in Dubai, adding that the vehicle is running in the American city by itself.

Al-Awadi explained that the displayed Cruise vehicle traveled about 50,000 miles in transporting passengers in San Francisco, noting that Cruise, with which the authority has entered into partnership agreements to operate these vehicles, is the first company in the world to obtain approvals to operate self-driving vehicles as taxis within commercial sector activity.

He added that the passengers in the city of Francisco download the application and pay for the trip like any other taxi service, pointing out that the vehicle began operating since the beginning of this year without a driver inside to monitor its performance, as there is a glass partition between the self-driving cabin and the passenger cabin in the back, in order to prevent any Possibility of tampering with the steering or steering systems.

Al-Awadi indicated that the experience of operating a cruise vehicle in Dubai will continue until the third quarter of next year, and it will pass all the operational stages applied by “Cruise” in San Francisco, and its operation in the first stage will be with a driver inside the vehicle to monitor performance and encourage passengers to try it, until the completion of All trial phases and actual operation will be launched in December 2023.

Al-Awadi touched on the most important devices in the vehicle, which ensure its effective and safe movement, stressing the presence of a number of radars that use laser technology, in addition to the presence of side cameras, explaining that the cameras with the radars transmit a 360-degree view.

It is noteworthy that GM and Cruise share a vision with the Roads and Transport Authority, in the contribution of self-driving vehicles, to a safe and less crowded future for all.

The self-driving cruise vehicle is the first fully electric vehicle, and is currently used in Cruise's commercial fleet of autonomous vehicles in San Francisco.
