With "Xanadù" Ricardo Bofill designed in 1971 a first example of a "Ciudad en el espacio", a "city in space": On the coast of Alicante, the block of flats rises out of the ground like a self-contained city. At that time, Bofill had the idea of ​​a "plug-in city" in mind: buildings in which rooms like capsules can be flexibly docked to a central carrier system.
