I'm good at "fighting gray": peer sharing breaks professional prejudices

The impact of the slump in the real estate market on the civil engineering industry, the inability to recruit people for the civil engineering major of a certain university, and the dismissal of construction personnel of a central enterprise for complaining about the current situation of the civil engineering industry... In the face of many ridicules and rumors about the civil engineering industry on the Internet, many civil engineering students have become confused.

What is the reality of the industry? Recently, the School of Civil Engineering of Southwest Jiaotong University launched a series of invited activities with the theme of "I'm good at 'greying'", inviting alumni employed in the field of civil engineering to share the real situation of "ashing".

"Ashing" originally referred to pouring concrete at the construction unit. Due to the characteristics of civil engineering, graduates often need to go to the construction site for practical training, and the term "ashing" has become synonymous with civil engineering students to refer to the employment destination.

"Ashing" at the construction site, why is it "good"? Behind this is actually the efforts made by the School of Civil Engineering of Southwest Jiaotong University to change students' concept of employment.

When "beating ashes" became the whole network black

Chen Zhixin, a graduate of the civil engineering major in railway direction of Southwest Jiaotong University, remembers that when filling out the college entrance examination volunteers, the labels that appeared when searching for "civil engineering" were mostly "easy to find a job", "earn more", "sunset industry" and so on. Because she was more interested in this, she also filled in the professional volunteer form with "civil engineering".

As more and more civil engineering practitioners share their work experience on the Internet, the channels for understanding civil engineering professional employment have become more diverse. Students gathered under the video of civil engineering professional UP on social platforms and saw images of employees falling into deep wells at construction sites, choking ashes under the scorching sun, and arguing with workers late at night. These videos have been dubbed "dissuasion from the Bible" and have been viewed millions of times.

In the discussion of civil engineering majors, the most frequent keyword has become "sinkhole", "bucket running" has also become an industry black word, and the voice of advising high school graduates not to study civil engineering is also endless.

Dong Pengfei, a teacher from the Admissions and Employment Office of Southwest Jiaotong University, believes that in order to gain traffic, many videos on the Internet highlight the dirty and chaotic life at the construction site. Many students are easily affected by these sounds.

"These discussions have certainly cast a shadow over the minds of engineers working or about to work in the civil industry." Deng Shuxin, who works for a bridge specialty technology company, said.

Deng Shuxin, 27 years old this year, graduated from the School of Civil Engineering of Southwest Jiaotong University with a master's degree in 2021, and is now a technical manager. He believes that do not let some remarks blind themselves, how civil engineering students should choose, according to their actual situation, reasonable analysis, do not blindly follow.

The double cycle of slow employment and difficult recruitment

This is reflected in the employment options of the students. Li Yu, a counselor in charge of employment at the School of Civil Engineering at Southwest Jiaotong University, received a phone call from a parent, asking the school to help the child cancel the signed tripartite agreement.

"The child didn't think clearly when he signed the contract, and we prefer that he continue his education." A parent of a student who signed a contract with an overseas company of an engineering unit told Li Yu.

The entrance examination becomes the first choice for students. According to Li Yu's statistics, the school's civil engineering college has more than half of the intention to enter graduate school this year. Taking Chen Zhixin's dormitory as an example, four people have two graduate students and two graduate school entrance examinations, and "no one wants to go directly to work."

This makes it difficult for companies that come to recruit. In the spring recruitment seminar of the 2023 graduates, the publicity of some engineering units will appear empty. "More teachers than students are recruited." Li Yu said.

At the double election meeting, the booth of the engineering unit was rarely visited. In contrast, the booth of a county institution from Yunfu City, Guangdong Province looked like a city.

In fact, it is not difficult for civil engineering students to find a job.

"I submitted 3 resumes, and all 3 passed." Pu Sihan, a graduate of the civil engineering bridge direction of Southwest Jiaotong University who devoted himself to the spring recruitment tide, found that "as long as it is not particularly serious, the investment engineering unit can basically enter." ”

Li Yu counted the number of positions recruited and the number of graduates, and each graduate could choose an average of 10 positions.

"I hope students can listen to their peers"

It is difficult for enterprises to recruit and students are low in seeking employment, which has become a hurdle in front of employment in the college. "The traditional employment guidance method is not ideal, will the effect of using the power of peers be better?" After the change of thinking, Li Yu immediately invited several alumni who had already worked in the engineering industry to write their own work stories.

In the letter to the juniors, Deng Shuxin analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of the engineering unit, described the working environment and work intensity in detail, and also clarified some misunderstandings. He said that informatization, intelligence and automation are profoundly affecting the scientific and technological innovation and management changes of the civil engineering industry, and the future bridge maintenance, reinforcement, transformation and management will face huge market demand.

"The business that special companies are engaged in now is the field change that is taking place and will continue to take place in the civil engineering industry, and it may be the 'outlet' of the future." Deng Shuxin said to the juniors.

Zhang Bocong, a 2017 graduate of Southwest Jiaotong University majoring in engineering mechanics, introduced based on his own experience: In the "ashing" industry with heavy production tasks, engineering units give many promotion opportunities, "employees who perform relatively well in the two aspects of skill improvement and management experience growth have an average of one promotion opportunity every two years".

As a girl, Sun Xuemin, a 2020 graduate of the railway engineering major of Southwest Jiaotong University, also shared her confusion in her hearts to her juniors. She said that in July 2020, she walked into the construction site with a nervous heart, confused and at a loss, "During that time, she constantly denied myself and did not know what was the meaning of my work."

But the concern of colleagues and the help of leaders allowed Sun Xuemin to survive that "not very bright period", stay at the construction site, and stay on the construction line. She participated in several achievement competitions in 2021 and achieved good results, which greatly increased her confidence.

"After two years of living on the construction site, I can feel that it is not as bad as expected, and it is much friendlier than expected." Sun Xuemin said.

These "dust" stories were put on the WeChat public account platform of the School of Civil Engineering of Southwest Jiaotong University, and the highest one has been read more than 1300,<> times. In the submission, alumni introduced their work content and experience in detail. Whether it's creating a <>D model in a project department in a city or completing daily measurements and structural design at a railway construction site, alumni are practicing their own work.

After seeing the request for a manuscript from his alma mater, Wang Qing, a civil engineering graduate of the school who has been working for nearly a year, also hopes to tell his own story.

"When I was in my junior year, I was also resistant to going to the construction unit, but I talked to the counselor and senior, and finally chose to give it a try." Wang Qing said, "The treatment of the company is good, and when I go, I find that the real job is not as bad as I imagined." Now, as an alumnus, Wang Qing also hopes that through his sharing, he can let his juniors and sisters take an objective look at the "dust" life.

At present, more than 20 submissions have been received for the "I'm good at 'graying'" request activity. The sharing of peers gave Chen Zhixin other ideas. After talking to alumni and counselors, she decided to give it a try.

"After all, every industry has its own hardships and fatigues, and excluding work does not solve the problem, so it is still necessary to correct its own positioning." Chen Zhixin said.
