«COP 27»

We are a few days away from the activities of "COP27", the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2022 (UNFCCC COP 27), the most important and largest international conference on climate action with the participation of world leaders and leaders, scheduled to be held in the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Hosting COP 27 or the Conference of the Parties, or COP27, will advance international efforts for the good of humanity, and the preservation of life and the sustainability of the Earth and its resources for generations to come.

Egypt’s hosting of this global event comes after joint celebrations of the Emirati-Egyptian relations and the deep-rooted brotherhood, which everyone will see reflected on the size of the Emirati participation, the quality of representation and the innovative initiatives that the UAE will present in Egypt. Egypt’s success is a success for the UAE, and the level of representation and its size is unprecedented.

This is Egypt, the “mother of the world” in a global event and an international environmental celebration, seeking to protect the earth and humanity, and this is also coupled with the fact that the environment is the passion of leadership, historically since the founding father and leader of empowerment, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God rest his soul, until the era of the leader Centennial His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, may God protect him.

What do we expect from our participation, and what are our initiatives, which reflect our contributions and civilization, and our leadership in supporting renewable energy production, sustainability and its goals, and will we remind the world of its commitments that have not yet seen the light?

The Emirati steps, such as the Emirates Strategic Initiative, which seeks to achieve climate neutrality 2050, reflect an institutional commitment to support climate action, and the contributions of the UAE arm "Masdar", have reflected investment maturity and strengthened international partnerships and global contributions in support of other countries in facing the challenges of climate change, and the sustainability of investment in the green economy. It is a practical application of the concepts of "ESG", environment, social responsibility, and governance, a concept that is still far from the desired maturity globally.

The country’s initiatives to combat climate change have achieved unprecedented numbers for many other countries, and I am even certain that compliance with the requirements of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change (Paris Accord or COP21) from most other countries did not come close to the country’s contributions, as the agreement included setting a minimum value of $100 billion, as an annual environmental climate allocation, until 2025, so that environmental investment will exceed half a trillion dollars in five years.

This requires governance and scrutiny of non-compliant countries.

Will we witness a global assessment of the extent to which countries are committed to implementing their defined contributions under the Paris Agreement, or will they continue to theorize, manipulate the details and use the Ukraine crisis, with so-called first world countries, evading carbon tax cuts to reduce costs to their people.

Will climate return the focus of global attention?

This is what we hope and trust that our leadership will work successfully on it.
