Big game leak of GTA 6 - hackers threaten to release more

The material, which includes 90 video clips, has been posted on the GTA Forums forum by a person who also claims to be behind a hack of Uber a few days earlier.

- The person came across these files through internal communication channels for Rockstar games, which develops the game, says Effie Karabuda in SVT's Morgonstudion.

The game developer confirms

For a long time it was silent from the official side, but on Monday evening, game developer Rockstar Games confirmed and apologized for the leak in a Twitter post.

- They have been working on this for ten years, so it is a very big deal that this is coming out to the public, says Karabuda.

The leaked material shows, among other things, that the game takes place in a fictional version of Miami, called "Vice City" and that for the first time in the game series, a woman is in one of the main roles.

Despite the leak, Rockstar games announces that their "work on the next 'Grand theft auto' game will continue as planned".

The reaction of the fans is worrying

According to Dagens Industri, the game's publisher Take two interactive fell on the stock market after the weekend's leak.

In addition to the risk of financial consequences, there is also some concern about how devoted fans will react.

Many of them have been thirsting for the game since its predecessor GTA V was released in 2013 and have high expectations.

- Some people think it's really cool that the hacker has managed to get hold of these files, but a lot of people also think that the material we see now is quite ugly.

People are upset that it doesn't look good, says Karabuda.

According to her, the appearance is largely due to the fact that the game is still in a development phase and is scheduled to be released only in 2-3 years.

The hacker threatens to leak more

The hacker's motive for the game leak is still unknown but the person has expressed a willingness to negotiate and get in touch with Rockstar games or Take two who publish the game.

If that doesn't happen, the alleged hacker threatens to leak more material, including the game's so-called "source code".

Something that could be worth billions and be valuable to the game's competitors.

- If you get hold of the source code, you can fiddle with the game, spread viruses, bypass programs that protect the game against cheating.

It is the game developer's most valuable asset and it would be a huge pain if it leaked, says Karabuda.
