Four people arrested in largest heroin seizure in German history

German prosecutors said on Friday that four people were arrested after police made the largest seizure of heroin in the country's history, seizing nearly 700 kilograms as part of a security operation against a drug smuggling gang from Iran.

The authorities seized this quantity of drugs in the coastal city of Hamburg at the end of August.

The arrests were made overnight Thursday, after police searched 10 buildings in the cities of Dresden and Chemnitz in Hamburg and in the Netherlands.

Police confiscated documents, laptops, smartphones and vehicles.

Those arrested are a 40-year-old Turkish and Serbian dual national suspected of being the ringleader, a 35-year-old Iranian in the Netherlands, a 54-year-old German suspected of using his farm and resources to transport drugs, and a 53-year-old Turkish broker.
