This Monday, Doctor Jimmy Mohamed, health consultant of Europe 1, looks at attention deficit disorder, with or without hyperactivity.

A neurodevelopmental problem that worries many parents, especially because it is difficult to pinpoint.

Attention deficit disorder, with or without hyperactivity, is often difficult to diagnose because an unruly child, who has trouble keeping up with school, does not necessarily have a neurodevelopmental problem.

The symptoms are numerous and are not always the same from one child to another.

This Monday in

Sans Rendez-vous

, the health program of Europe 1, doctor Jimmy Mohamed responds to a father who wonders if the behavior of his youngest son could not be attributed to a form hyperactivity.

Gabriel's question:

"I am a father of three children. My last born, 9 years old, has sometimes violent mood swings. He is in conflict with his two sisters all the time, he even hits them. With my wife we are distraught, we wonder if our son might not be hyperactive. What do you think? "

Jimmy Mohamed's response:

"Diagnosis is difficult, and often takes a long time. So I won't pretend to say for sure what it may or may not be. But what Gabriel describes looks a bit like impulsiveness, which may be part of attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity.

It should be understood that this is not a disease, but a developmental disorder that will associate three symptoms of a rather variable intensity: attention deficit, hyperactivity and impulsivity .

Hyperactivity in a child results in permanent restlessness, it is a child who will have difficulty staying in place.

Impulsivity in children is characterized by difficulty in waiting, the child will be constantly frustrated, which could correspond to what Gabriel describes.

This is a 9 year old child, is this the right age to make a diagnosis?

At 2 or 3 years, it is very difficult to make the diagnosis.

A restless, slightly turbulent child is not necessarily a hyperactive child.

There should be at least an attention deficit, which could manifest as difficulty completing certain tasks requiring concentration.

It is therefore at the beginning of school that we realize this problem, around 5-6 years old, and generally before 12 years old.

Children can be called dreamers by the teacher, they are also said to have a tendency to have their heads in the clouds.

School is a good marker because teachers are supposed to be trained to spot children who are a little different from others.

Who to turn to in case of doubt?

If you feel like your child is different from others, start by talking to your family doctor, who is your first choice.

He will look to see if there are other problems besides learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, sleep disorders or relationship difficulties, because social ties are often more difficult to forge for these children.

Subsequently, several consultations with a specialist - allow at least six months for comprehensive care - will be set up.

The support varies between treatments and daily arrangements.

It is absolutely necessary that the child keeps the social bond, that he is not excluded from his other little comrades.

We must also ensure that he does not fall behind in learning at school, and finally make sure that everything goes well at home. "
