More than 60% of the respondents turn off or stay away from their mobile phones to be more focused, and 52.34% of the respondents use planners to improve concentration.

About 90% of college students surveyed hope to improve their concentration

While racking his brains to write his assignment on Internet International Politics, Li Nan couldn't help but grab his phone and scroll through his Moments.

Li Nan, who is studying at a university in Henan, often loses focus when doing something that seems difficult and difficult to start.

Chen Mai, who is a senior at a university in Fujian, has noticed since he was in high school that he was sometimes distracted from doing things. He would do English homework for a while and then want to run to do math homework.

Recently, she discovered that a psychological term she was familiar with, ADHD, appeared frequently in the media and social networks.

ADHD, which stands for "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder", is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that affects patients' attention, memory, decision-making and other abilities, causing them to have behavioral and emotional problems such as inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.

Because someone in his high school class had been diagnosed with ADHD, Chen Mai, who felt that he was not focused enough and sometimes forgetful, also felt that his situation matched many symptoms of ADHD.

After being "suspicious" for a while, she went to the hospital to seek diagnosis and found out that she was not an ADHD patient.

ADHD has received more and more attention recently. Chen Mai found that many netizens, like her, felt, "Isn't this just me?"

China Youth Daily and China Youth Daily recently launched a questionnaire survey among college students across the country on related hot phenomena, and a total of 3,634 valid questionnaires were collected.

The survey results show that about 90% of the respondents said that they have encountered the problem of lack of concentration, of which 29.44% of the respondents said that they often have it, 34.23% of the respondents said that they sometimes have it, and 26.39% of the respondents said that they have it sometimes. It means occasionally.

In addition, 4.84% of the respondents said that they are unlikely to lose focus, and 5.09% of the respondents said that they would not lose focus.

89.40% of the respondents hope to improve their concentration.

However, not all concentration problems cause serious distress to respondents.

Faced with their own lack of concentration, 11.36% of the respondents said they were not troubled at all, 54.43% felt a little troubled, 24.60% felt somewhat troubled, and 9.60% said they were very troubled. .

Fragmented information, environmental stimulation, physical fatigue, etc. can affect concentration

In the past six months or so, Lei Tingting, who works in marketing in Beijing, has often seen reports or discussions about ADHD online.

She found that many symptoms of ADHD, such as being easily distracted and procrastinating, are indeed problems that everyone encounters.

"Sometimes it is difficult for me to calm down, such as when I encounter something difficult and want to escape." But she will not be troubled by this, because the things that distract her are often not important. It's an important thing, and she can get into it quickly.

Reading literature and deciding on the topic of the thesis is Li Nan’s “peak time for distraction”.

"Sometimes there are message reminders on my phone, and sometimes there are no reminders on my phone. I will also find ways to chat with others to create opportunities for distraction. Sometimes when I look at documents, I will think of other things. I often read one document in the morning. I don’t understand.” However, Li Nan was very clear about the reasons why he was distracted, “Firstly, he was distracted by his mobile phone, and secondly, he was thinking about the topic he had not chosen, the abstract he had not written, and the framework he had not decided on. The more he thought about it, the more upset he became. Every time before writing a paper, I feel like there are many mountains pressing on me.”

A survey by the Chinese Youth School Media showed that the reasons why respondents believed they were not focused enough include too much fragmented information, making it difficult to focus on in-depth content (65.88%); being involved in various information flows (62.63%); and being quiet due to too many things. Not willing to give up (47.94%) and so on.

2.50% of the respondents said they had been diagnosed with ADHD.

Feng Tingyong, a second-level professor and doctoral supervisor at Southwest University, deputy director of the Department of Psychology at Southwest University, and director of the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Psychology, introduced that some young people do have problems such as inattention, distraction, procrastination, and impulsivity. This can be divided into two categories. Judging from the various situations, one is pathological and the other is general.

"In fact, everyone has a lack of concentration to some extent, and there are various reasons. For example, physical and mental fatigue may lead to a decrease in concentration, and procrastination may occur when work pressure is high and things are difficult to complete. In addition, people It is inevitable to be affected by the environment, and external temptations and stimulation can lead to easy distraction." Feng Tingyong said that if children frequently watch short videos, they will become less and less focused.

"Research shows that visual and auditory stimulation can easily attract attention. The rotating lights at the entrance of the barber shop, the sound of advertisements or scene changes will attract us. This is the principle. Similarly, long-term viewing of short videos will attract unintentional attention. '. In psychology, what we call 'intentional attention' is what we call concentration, while too much 'unintentional attention' will make our attention easily distracted."

However, Feng Tingyong specifically pointed out that there is an essential difference between this type of attention deficit and pathological ADHD.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder. According to my country's 2021 popular survey data, the incidence rate of this disorder among children is 6.3%. About half of them will continue into adulthood without treatment, which is about 3 years. % of adults are affected by ADHD.

"Real ADHD patients will have their concentration greatly affected, their ability to regulate their emotions impaired, their working memory seriously impaired, and they will encounter many difficulties in life, work, marriage, etc."

General attention deficit disorder and ADHD both need to be addressed

Lei Tingting noticed that there are many interpretive articles or videos on public accounts, Zhihu, Bilibili and other platforms, telling everyone that ADHD patients are not lazy, but just have difficulty controlling or regulating some of their emotions and behaviors.

One of her friends who has been diagnosed with ADHD will also share his treatment experience on social platforms.

The media environment has given Lei Tingting a better understanding of ADHD, and it has also given her more understanding and care for her friends.

In Feng Tingyong's view, the general public attention to ADHD has a certain positive impact, allowing the entire society to better understand the ADHD group and disseminate relevant knowledge more objectively and scientifically.

"Just as society's attention to autism has increased in recent years, for this vulnerable group, support and understanding from all walks of life will be helpful."

However, the concept of ADHD has become more and more popular, which once confused Cheng Jinjin, who was studying at a university in Tianjin.

"Do you often find it difficult to stay focused when doing boring or repetitive tasks?" "Do you often find it difficult to calm down and relax when you are alone?" Looking at the items in the "Adult ADHD Diagnostic Scale" As she described it, she couldn't help but doubt herself: "Could it be that I also have 'adult ADHD'?"

Looking through some popular science articles about ADHD or sharing on social media, many netizens in the comment area have the same idea as Cheng Jinjin.

"Shocked, I'm totally right." "I didn't expect it to be so consistent. I'm a little worried now. It'll be fine if it doesn't affect my life."... Self-diagnosis, confusion, and self-ridicule are the reactions of some netizens after seeing relevant information.

Chen Mai, who has "self-diagnosed" before, knows very well that this kind of understanding and "self-diagnosis" are very unscientific.

In Cheng Jinjin’s eyes, some young people are “diagnosed in the cloud” probably out of curiosity and empathy for new concepts. “Some symptoms of ADHD are universal and easy for people to relate to.” But she is also worried: “ Will treating ADHD as a 'fashion item' cause trouble to friends who really suffer from ADHD?"

Chen Mai also found that after the concept of ADHD became known to more people, some students around him would use "I have ADHD" to describe daily "wandering thoughts", just like the popular use of "PTSD" (trauma) Post-stress disorder) described himself as "psychologically damaged."

Chen Mai feels that psychological problems need to be faced seriously, but she also understands that although ADHD has attracted more attention, there are still only a few people who truly understand this problem in depth.

Feng Tingyong introduced that to distinguish whether your lack of concentration requires professional evaluation and treatment, you need to see whether there is obvious impairment of social functions. If the symptoms significantly affect study, work, marriage and quality of life, you need to go to a professional institution for evaluation. , and then carry out intervention and treatment.

"However, the public's attention to ADHD is currently increasing, and some people are making fun of ADHD to relieve their own emotions. Some non-patients laugh at themselves about ADHD, which is actually a way of ridiculing themselves to find a lack of concentration. , procrastination, and poor emotional regulation ability." In Feng Tingyong's view, this is a way for some people to release stress.

"There is nothing wrong with this expression. Maybe after a while, when the relevant craze passes, the frequency of people's use of this word will also decrease."

Use scientific methods to improve concentration

Feng Tingyong pointed out that if it is a general concentration problem, it can be adjusted through mindfulness training and other methods.

"People with similar problems can alleviate them through some methods that have been verified by scientific research. Taking procrastination as an example, we must first start. When we actually do it, we will find that things are not as difficult as imagined, and we can reduce our resistance. In addition, You can help by thinking more about the benefits that completing one thing will bring to you, choosing one of several things you don’t want to do that you think is easiest to start with, or splitting the task into small, staged tasks. Overcome procrastination yourself.”

Cheng Jinjin believes that before feeling anxious about "cloud-diagnosed" ADHD, one can actively self-regulate first.

When she urgently needs to complete a certain learning task, she will go to places with a good learning atmosphere such as libraries and study rooms. When looking for information, she will directly use the search box to reduce the number of times she sees personalized recommendations and avoid distraction.

Xiao Ze, who is studying at Fujian Normal University, said that if a roommate came to chat with him while he was studying, he would say, "I will read for a while and you can just chat."

"Balance between work and rest" is also one of his tips.

After every 60 to 90 minutes of studying, he would stop to relax and detach from the tense state.

In order to solve the "distraction problem", Li Nan will take the initiative to create pressure on himself.

"For example, I have made an appointment with my supervisor to meet with me in a few days and bring a newly written paper with me. Then I must finish it before meeting him. My concentration will improve a lot when writing the paper." I found that I can overcome the sense of accomplishment caused by not focusing. , will also become a motivation to inspire her.

However, Lei Tingting also found that her friends with ADHD were indeed very weak in self-regulation. "Sometimes the emotions suddenly rise, and it is difficult to suppress them. Medicines and treatments are still needed to solve the problem."

Chen Mai, who has always been interested in psychology, still remembers that a high school classmate suffering from ADHD had an emotional breakdown after failing a mock exam. He left school by car and transferred to another school.

"At that time, neither he nor his parents understood ADHD very well, and felt that the poor condition might be related to the school environment." In Chen Mai's eyes, although the public's attention to ADHD has increased, the level of awareness and understanding is not enough.

She hopes that she can also become a psychologist in the future, "to let more people understand psychological problems and help people who encounter problems relieve their pain."
