Loud, crowded, colorful - for many people New Year's Eve is usually a reason to celebrate and roar.

Both will only be possible to a limited extent this year.

The nationwide corona lockdown and the contact restrictions also apply at the turn of the year.

According to the federal government, private gatherings of your own household and another household are allowed on New Year's Eve.

A maximum of five people can meet.

Children up to the age of 14 do not count.

On New Year's Eve and New Year's Eve, there is also a nationwide ban on gatherings.

The sale of pyrotechnics was generally banned this year.

After all: According to experts, the sales ban will ensure better air.

"A significant reduction in fine dust pollution on New Year's Day can of course be expected, since (...) almost no fireworks will be set off," said the spokesman for the Federal Environment Agency (UBA), Felix Poetschke, of the German press agency.

Lighting fireworks that have been stored for a long time can be dangerous

The Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing recommends that anyone who still has fireworks should not ignite it.

The reason for this is that fireworks that have been stored for a longer period of time lose their function or can react more slowly due to the absorption of moisture.

Who then lights up more often can experience a nasty surprise.

Fireworks that are kept excessively dry can also change their function and react faster or slower.

In contrast to the ban on selling adult fireworks, dealers are allowed to offer sparklers, table fireworks and so-called children's fireworks.

In the corona protection regulations of the federal states, there is mostly talk of public fireworks and fireworks in public places and streets.

For the most part, the ban does not apply to the setting off of fireworks in private rooms - but there are exceptions.

These are the rules and exceptions in the federal states

Baden-Württemberg:

Rockets and firecrackers can only be ignited in your own garden on New Year's Eve.

Celebrating people in public places are a thing of the past.

Due to the exit restriction, the apartment may only be vacated after 8 p.m. on New Year's Eve for a valid reason.

Bavaria:

Burning down or carrying pyrotechnics on New Year's Eve is forbidden throughout Bavaria in “public places”.

The respective municipalities determine which places are meant.

Fireworks stocks from previous years can be set off on private property such as the garden or balcony - but this is also prohibited in some cities and in the Middle Franconia region.

The house or apartment may only be left for good cause during the nightly exit restriction from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

So visitors have to be prepared for an overnight stay if they want to celebrate the New Year.

Berlin:

In the capital, too, the firing of firecrackers is prohibited in many places: the Berlin Senate published a list of 56 places - including sights such as the Brandenburg Gate.

Despite the ban on selling fireworks, the Berlin fire brigade is preparing for the state of emergency for New Year's Eve in the same way as in previous years.

Brandenburg:

The setting off of fireworks is basically possible in Brandenburg, but taboo in public places.

According to the ministries, corresponding orders were issued by the districts and independent cities on the basis of the current containment ordinance.

The state government had strongly advised against igniting fireworks.

The exit restrictions will be relaxed for New Year's Eve: On New Year's Eve (i.e. from December 31, 2020 to January 1, 2021) Brandenburgers can be outside until 2:00 a.m.

Bremen:

New Year's Eve fireworks are generally prohibited in the smallest federal state, because the cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven are prohibited from burning fireworks.

People are not allowed to ignite rockets and firecrackers that they already have at home, for example from the previous year.

Small fireworks such as sparklers and snap peas, which can be bought all year round, may be used.

Hamburg:

According to the Senate press office, the sale and ignition of fireworks are generally prohibited this year.

"Only the smallest fireworks such as sparklers or table fireworks are allowed," added the spokeswoman.

According to the current containment ordinance, this does not only apply in public places, but also in your own garden or on the balcony.

Despite the nationwide Corona shutdown, relatives of Hamburgers were able to stay in hotels at Christmas.

The Senate spokeswoman emphasized that this no longer applies to the turn of the year.

Hessen:

The sale of fireworks and firecrackers is prohibited this year, and in many places it is not allowed to ignite the stocks from last year.

Which places these are is up to the respective municipality.

For example, Frankfurt and Offenbach have issued a ban on fireworks in a number of areas within the city.

Only a maximum of five people from two households are allowed to meet in public.

For celebrations at home, compliance with the rules is "strongly recommended".

Also for the last night of the year for the people in the districts with night curfews: From 9 p.m., the apartment may only be left for good reason.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania:

The ignition of pyrotechnics is prohibited in public places and streets in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Tourist overnight stays in hotels and all other accommodations are still not allowed over New Year's Eve and New Year's.

Visitors from other federal states are not allowed to come to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for a day trip unless they visit their so-called nuclear family here.

Lower Saxony:

It is forbidden to set off fireworks and to carry fireworks and rockets on busy streets, paths and squares.

The districts and large cities determine which locations are affected.

North Rhine-Westphalia:

parties are prohibited.

According to the requirements of the Corona Protection Ordinance, meetings with friends or family on New Year's Eve in your own four walls are not limited by the number of guests.

In some cities and districts particularly affected by the corona virus, a night curfew also applies at the turn of the year.

For example in the Gütersloh district.

Citizens have to stay in the house between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The apartment may only be left in special exceptions - New Year's Eve celebrations and fireworks are not included.

There are different rules from city to city as to whether firecrackers that have already been bought can be banged.

In the state capital Düsseldorf, for example, there is a ban on fireworks in the entire old town.

In Bonn, gunfire is prohibited in public spaces - in the entire city area.

Rhineland-Palatinate:

The setting down of fireworks in public places and streets is completely prohibited.

The municipalities determine exactly which locations are affected.

In Ludwigshafen, Speyer and Frankenthal as well as in the Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis there are still night exit restrictions until January 10th due to the high incidence values.

People are only allowed to leave the house between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. in justified exceptional cases.

Saxony:

The current Saxon corona protection regulation only prohibits the sale of fireworks.

It is only "strongly advised against" burning off fireworks that are already there.

The responsible municipal authorities could, however, order a ban on the burning of fireworks in public places that are very popular.

The curfew between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. does not apply on New Year's Eve.

Saxony-Anhalt:

In Saxony-Anhalt, most of the municipalities refrain from banning the burning of New Year's Eve rockets and firecrackers in popular places in order to prevent crowds.

However, there are local firecrackers bans.

Saarland:

Publicly held fireworks are prohibited.

Igniting New Year's Eve fireworks is not recommended.

"In addition, the local police authorities can prohibit both the ignition of pyrotechnics and the consumption of alcoholic beverages in busy squares and streets," the country says.

Schleswig-Holstein:

Anyone who still has rockets or firecrackers from last year may not ignite them in inner-city locations, for example in Kiel, Flensburg or Lübeck.

The Schleswig-Flensburg district generally prohibits the use of fireworks in built-up areas.

On islands such as Sylt or in the North Sea resort of St. Peter-Ording, fireworks are forbidden every year for reasons of fire protection because of thatched roof houses

The traditional Rummelpottlauf is permitted in the Nordfriesland district with certain conditions: Members of one household may ring the doorbell of another household.

If the door is opened, everyone involved must adhere to the distance rules.

Thuringia:

According to the Thuringian Corona Ordinance, fireworks are prohibited on public streets, squares and in parks.

The exit restrictions do not apply from 10 p.m. on December 31, 2020 up to and including 3 a.m. the following day.
