The Cannes town hall wants to boost its two museums.

And that will first involve a name change.

The Musée de la Castre, dedicated to the primitive arts and travel, becomes “the museum of world explorations”, the “Mem”.

And that of the sea, on Sainte-Margurite Island, will henceforth be "the Museum of the Iron Mask and the Fort Royal", in reference to the cell which once housed this famous (but enigmatic) prisoner.

These changes will be effective on January 1 to accompany a vast modernization program.

"They have not benefited from a major renovation for forty years," points out Mayor LR David Lisnard.

The opportunity presents itself today […] to include these two jewels of the Riviera's heritage in the ambitions of opening up to the world and of Cannes' influence.

"

This modernization provides for "gradual transformations of buildings, museum routes, event programming and cultural mediation over the next five to ten years", indicates the community.
