  • A cryptosporidiosis epidemic started two months ago in Grasse
  • The parasite, transported in the drinking water network, contaminated 155 people.
  • Measures to restrict the consumption of tap water have been taken.

The prefectural order regulating since December 11 the consumption of tap water no longer concerns only seven municipalities, but the alert is still topical after the start of an epidemic of cryptosporidiosis in mid-November in the west of the Alpes-Maritimes department.

This infection of the digestive tract due to the cryptosporidium parasite and generally mild, with sometimes vomiting and abdominal pain, can be more severe in an immunocompromised person. The Paca Regional Health Agency takes stock on Tuesday.

The number of cases does not increase

The figure is the same as that released on December 17. This Tuesday, 155 people with cryptosporidiosis were reported by medical biology laboratories in the Alpes-Maritimes. "The number of cases has not increased due to the respect by the population of the recommendations for the use of water by the ARS Paca and the progressive immunization of users," says the agency.

Valbonne is no longer affected by restrictions

"After the purging of the network and the diversion of its supply to a source other than the Foulon canal, samples were analyzed and made it possible to lift the measures", in Valbonne, where "the population can now drink l 'tap water normally,' says ARS.

The prefectoral decree is still in force at Bar-sur-Loup, Châteauneuf de Grasse (Pré du Lac sector), Gourdon (Pont du Loup), Grasse (except the Plascassier and Clavary hospital sectors), Mougins (football stadium sector de la Valmasque), Le Rouret (chemin Saint-Pierre and Vieux-Rouret) and Tourrettes sur Loup (chemin de la Papeterie).

The source still not identified

Uncertainty remains. Work has been undertaken by the sub-prefecture of Grasse, in particular with representatives of the agricultural profession, to determine the possible origins of the contamination of the water and to prevent any recurrence. But "at present, no exact origin has yet been identified," said the ARS on Tuesday.
