An oil painting by the artist Banksy representing the British House of Commons full of chimpanzees was sold this Thursday at an auction in London for 9.8 million pounds (11 million euros) .

The painting was painted in 2009 and, according to the catalog of the auction house Sotheby's , "offers a premonitory view of the increasingly tumultuous politics in the contemporary United Kingdom."

The price of the work, of a size of 4.20 by 2.50 meters, exceeded the expectations of the sellers, who had valued it at a value of between 1.5 and 2 million pounds (from 1.69 to 2 , 25 million euros) .

In the picture, a chimpanzee appears standing, with a folder under his arm, in the place where the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom usually makes his parliamentary interventions. The opposition and government benches are also occupied by primates, as is the seat reserved for the president of the Commons and the public gallery. Some of the chimpanzees shout and make gestures during what seems like a debate in the chamber.

Banksy exhibited the work for the first time in a successful exhibition in Bristol (South West England) in 2009 that brought together nearly 300,000 visitors.

At first, it was presented under the title 'Question Time' , which apparently refers to the weekly control session that the head of the British Government usually faces in Parliament. Later, however, the artist modified it by the current 'Parliament devolved' , something like "Delegated Parliament".

The hitherto owner of the painting, which took it up for sale today, acquired it in 2011 directly from the artist, according to the auction house.
