At around 3:11 a.m. on the 40rd, a teacher who was an advisor to the yachting club of a local high school who was conducting club activities off the coast of Higashi-Otaru Beach in Otaru City, Hokkaido, reported to the Japan Coast Guard that it was too windy to return to port.

At that time, seven people, including an advisory teacher, four students, and two friends of teachers who were assisting with club activities, were in three yachts and one rubber boat, and patrol boats from the Japan Coast Guard and helicopters from the Hokkaido Police went to the scene and rescued everyone after 4:2 p.m.

A 7-year-old female friend of the faculty member was taken to hospital with suspected hypothermia, but none of them were injured.

According to the Otaru Coast Guard Office, at the time of the report, the wind strength near the site was 10 meters, the height of the waves was about 1 meter, and a warning of strong winds and waves had been issued.
