In the early days of the founding of New China, China's power industry was almost poor, not only the power generation and power grid lines were short, but the design technology, production technology, and equipment level were very low. Today, China has built the world's largest power system, which has undergone earth-shaking changes.

A small step forward in history is a big step in the cohesion of countless workers.

"When I was younger, electricity was a luxury. It's really not what it used to be! Ren, who is 94 years old this year, looks back on his past experience with great emotion, "It should be said that our power builders have played a great role in it. ”

Behind the progress, it is generations of power builders adhering to the spirit of serving the country with science, fearless of difficulties, courageous innovation and technology first, drawing a blueprint for power development from scratch, leading the progress of power technology, promoting the development of the power industry, and enabling China's power industry to achieve historic changes from starting to catching up and surpassing.

Go where the country needs it most

Economic development, power first, the northeast at the beginning of the founding of New China is China's heavy industry base, in urgent need of power design talents. Ren is a native of Zhejiang and graduated from Shanghai Jiaotong University. In 1952, at the age of 23, Ren Gao responded to the call of the state and went from Shanghai to Changchun to work and become a power engineer.

In 1952, the central government gave the Northeast Electricity Administration a difficult task, requiring the construction of a 1954 kV high-voltage transmission line by the end of March 3 to send electricity from the Fengman Hydropower Station to the Liaoning Heavy Industry Zone, referred to as the "Songdong Li" line. Although Ren Gao worked for a short time, the leader saw that he was a good seedling, so he appointed him to undertake the design of the line tower.

At that time, the 220 kV transmission line was the highest voltage in the world, such a big project, the first time for China, for the young novices involved in the design, was very challenging.

"At that time, the power design industry was still in its infancy, and the biggest problem was that there were no standards and specifications to refer to, and everyone did not know where to start. Later, we learned that there were several Soviet design regulations for reference, and the academy organized everyone to translate 2 books in a paragraph, so that we roughly had basic design principles. Ren recalled.

Although there are large design principles, specific to the design of the tower, the information that can be referred to is still very limited. Ren Gao first collected the original "cat head tower" information in the northeast, and then saw the photos of the wine cup tower from the Soviet magazine, referred to the two, groped for structural design by himself, and successfully drew his own wine cup tower drawings. After the design was completed, Ren also did the true tower test, and finally achieved success through the load test under different working conditions.

In 1954, the first 220 kV line designed and constructed by the Chinese, the Songdong Li Line, was officially completed.

Create what you don't have

The spirit is perpetual and the torch is passed on. Yan Chengyi was more than a decade younger than Ren, and they had worked together in an office for nearly a decade. "Mr. Ren's Zhejiang accent is very strong, and many people in the courtyard can't understand it, but I can know what he says, which is a tacit understanding." Yan Chengyi recalled.

In the late 20s and early 80s of the 90th century, during the period of deepening reform and opening up, China's economy developed rapidly, and the demand for electricity was also increasing. The imported large units of thermal power generation are expensive and the import channels are unstable, and the composition of domestic 600 MW large units is a technical difficulty that needs to be solved urgently. The state decided to achieve a breakthrough in localization in the second phase of the Harbin Third Power Plant Project. Yan Chengyi became the chief engineer in charge of this national key project.

However, "localization" is not only a simple concept, the number of main and auxiliary equipment of the two 600 MW units is as many as 3000,200 pieces, involving more than <> supporting manufacturers, and most of them are the first trial production in China. Yan Chengyi faced too many difficulties.

"Our power industry was originally created from scratch, and if the state can hand over such a major project to us, we just want to create what we don't have." Yan Chengyi held his breath when he remembered.

After careful analysis and layout, Yan Chengyi organized various majors to put forward 102 technical conditions for equipment optimization, and went to various manufacturers one by one to discuss and implement. On this basis, Yan Chengyi personally served as the leader of the leading group of engineering excellence, and presided over the formulation of DCS, unit operation mode research and compilation of more than 50 excellence projects, such as SDD, four major pipeline optimization, three-dimensional cable laying, shafting torsional vibration research, etc. The implementation of these measures has greatly promoted the localization process of the project.

After unremitting efforts, the project was successful. The localization rate of the main engine reached 88.9%, the localization rate of the auxiliary machine reached 90%, and the indicators of the unit created the best results in the history of the domestic large unit at that time, and the project won the <>th National Excellent Engineering Design Gold Award.

In 2000, Yan Chengyi was awarded the title of "National Engineering Survey and Design Master" by the state for his outstanding contributions in the field of energy and electricity.

Continue the spirit of labor

Yan Chengyi was Shi Lei's most respected division commander. After a long period of ear and ear, many people said that Shi Lei's temperament was very similar to Yan Chengyi, gentle and revealing strength.

In the new millennium, China's nuclear power industry has developed rapidly. Located in Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province, Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant is a large-scale nuclear power base in China with Russia's VVER nuclear power reactor type as the main technical route, and it is also the starting point for Shi Lei to open his dream of nuclear power.

"In 2010, as the engineer in charge, I undertook the design of the conventional island and BOP of Units 3 and 4 of the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant. The two units of nuclear islands use the Russian VVER reactor type, while the conventional island uses domestic equipment for the first time. Whether the whole project can be successful depends on whether the equipment can be successfully matched. Shi Lei recalled.

With a myriad of matching tasks, how can we find a breakthrough first in a complex situation? Shi Lei first set his sights on the unification of standards. Through extensive research and complex negotiation, he led the design team to overcome the difficulties of grading 201 items, including safety classification, seismic classification, specification classification and quality assurance classification, and formed 16 research results, laying an important foundation for the successful construction of the project.

In December 2018, the world's first nuclear power project for VVER nuclear islands matching domestic conventional islands, Tianwan Nuclear Power Units 12 and 3, was officially put into operation, of which the localization rate of conventional island and BOP equipment reached 4%, and the safety met the third-generation nuclear power standards and reached the international advanced level.
