Rasoulof, who was awarded the Berlin Film Festival's finest prize, the Golden Bear, for his film "There is no evil" in 2020, is one of many prominent cultural workers, athletes and other famous people who have been arrested in recent months precisely for criticizing state power, a wave of criticism that gained momentum seriously with the death of the 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini last September.

At the beginning of the month, the well-known director Jafar Pahani was also released on bail after seven months in prison.

Mohammad Rasoulof is one of Iran's most prominent directors, but his films are banned from being shown in the country.

In 2011, he was sentenced to six years in prison and a 20-year professional ban following suspicions of propaganda critical of the regime.

However, the prison sentence was later lifted.
