The setting is green and conducive to relaxation.

Along the Ille-et-Rance canal, which connects Rennes and Saint-Malo, two old lock houses await their buyers in Montreuil-sur-Ille (Ille-et-Vilaine).

For several years, the Brittany region, owner and manager of the waterways, has been looking for volunteers to enhance and give a second life to these pretty stone buildings that have long been abandoned.

Because with the rise of river tourism and the practice of cycling along the canal, these lock houses are now rediscovering an interest for the region which seeks to make them tourist sites.

Since Monday, a call for projects has been launched to take over the Coursgalais and Chanclin lock houses in order to “develop new tourist activities and new services” on these two sites.

Catering, accommodation and bike rental

Candidates, who have until February 28 to submit their application, are invited to propose "an offer of new and innovative nautical activities" such as accommodation on the water or the rental of canoes-kayaks or boats.

They will also have to take care of the reception of bicycles by offering a choice of snacks, a repair or rental service or accommodation.

Without forgetting "to ensure the maintenance and the safeguard of the built heritage of the canal", specifies the community of communes Val d'Ille-Aubigné on its website.

The call for projects is open to individuals, companies, associations and communities.
