Mud buildings have been used throughout history as residential homes, castles, and government buildings. There are entire cities built of mud, and among the peoples that were used by the Pharaohs, Romans, Mayan kings, and others. The Great Wall of China, as well as the “Alhambra Palace” in Spain, are among the famous buildings made of compressed mud.

The diversity of mud architecture is due to multiple climatic conditions, social and cultural factors, and a rich history of mud architectural practices adopted in various parts of the world.

In the Emirates, a group of the oldest mud buildings, dating back to the Bronze Age, were found in the Hili area in Al Ain, where what is believed to be settlements with circular structures dating back to the Umm Al Nar period (2500-2000 BC) were found.

Mud houses were found in some small villages in the regions of Hili and Rumaila, while excavations, which were recently conducted under the Qattara Art Center, provided compelling evidence of the existence of agricultural and industrial activities dating back to the Iron Age. Excavations conducted in Al Ain in recent years revealed, About a large number of mud buildings dating back to the early Islamic period, and mud buildings in Al Ain exceed about 100 multi-use buildings.
