The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is considering whether to proceed to the next stage regarding the "literature survey" that is being conducted in Hokkaido toward the selection of a final disposal site for high-level radioactive waste produced by nuclear power generation, so-called "nuclear waste". We have decided to hold a meeting of experts to sort out the requirements for making realistic judgments.

Regarding "nuclear waste", the government plans to set up a final disposal site deeper than 300 meters underground and bury it in "geological disposal". , Suttsu-cho and Kamoenai-mura in Hokkaido are proceeding with the first stage of a "literature survey."

The survey began two years ago, and in November this year, the survey period will be two years.

Prior to this, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, which receives a report on the survey results from NUMO, will hold a meeting of experts from next month onwards in order to technically decide whether to proceed to the next stage of the "overview survey", which involves boring. We decided on a policy to open up and organize the evaluation requirements.

Specifically, we will summarize the requirements to be clarified from the literature regarding the existence of underground resources such as active faults and volcanic activity records, minerals and other underground resources, and the stability of strata.

NUMO is expected to wait for these requirements to be finalized and report the results of the "literature survey" that is being carried out in two towns and villages in Hokkaido. We will listen to your feedback and decide whether to proceed to the next step.
