A 14-year-old boy who was found dead last week in Cambernauld, Scotland, was the victim of an online dare test on the digital platform Tiktok, according to his mother.

Lauryn Keating told the Scottish local newspaper Daily Record that her son Leon tried to hold his breath until he passed out as part of a so-called blackout challenge.

She found out about this from a friend of her son's, who apparently had been a witness.

"She said they thought he would wake up but Leon didn't come back," the mother said.

"You don't expect something like this to happen to your child," she said, advising other parents to warn their children.

"These online challenges are not worth their lives."

The case is reminiscent of that of 12-year-old Archie Battersbee, from Essex, who took part in the same test of courage and was left in a coma for an extended period before medical equipment was turned off;

He died in early August.

Keating tweeted Thursday, "These Tiktok dares need to be banned and hopefully retweeting and sharing my story can at least save another kid's life."

A spokesman for Tiktok assured his "deepest sympathy".

The allegations were taken "very seriously".

"Content of this type is prohibited on our platform and will be removed if found."
