Virgin Galactic spacecraft launches first passenger flight

Billionaire Richard Branson has just set out in the Virgin Galactic spacecraft with three other passengers and two commanders to spend a few minutes in space, on a journey that he hopes will encourage the emerging space tourism.

The plane took off from Spaceport America in New Mexico.

It is supposed to fly for about 50 minutes before launching the vehicle below it, which will run its own engine until it reaches space.
