A severe earthquake shook northeastern Japan on Saturday.

More than ten people were injured.

But there is no danger from a tsunami, as the weather authority announced.

The tremor at 11:08 p.m. (local time) had a magnitude of 7.1.

There are no irregularities in the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear ruin, reported the Japanese news agency Kyodo, citing the operator Tepco.

There were also no reports of damage from other currently decommissioned nuclear power plants.

In almost one million households, the power supply temporarily failed as a result of the shock.

According to initial reports that night, more than ten people were injured in Fukushima.

A fire broke out there, as Kyodo reported.

The broadcaster NHK showed pictures of shops in which the goods fell off the shelves.

According to the first preliminary reports, windows shattered sporadically on Sunday night and the exterior plaster was falling off on old prefabricated buildings.

There was initially no information about further major damage.

The earthquake center was in front of the two provinces of Fukushima and Miyagi in the northeast at a depth of 60 kilometers.

Almost exactly ten years ago, on March 11, 2011, the region was devastated by a major 9.0 earthquake and a massive typhoon.

At that time around 18,500 people were killed in the floods.

In the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant there was a disaster.

“My mother was immediately reminded of the disaster ten years ago,” one resident told NHK.

Pictures had fallen from the walls in his house.

"It was scary".

The shock on Saturday also caused the buildings in the Tokyo area to sway for a long time.

There were initially no reports of damage or injuries from there.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga instructed his government to record possible damage as quickly as possible, to initiate rescue measures if necessary and to inform citizens quickly.

The island kingdom of Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world.

Four tectonic plates meet in its vicinity, the Pacific, North American, Eurasian and Filipino plates.

This causes tremors again and again.

There were several aftershocks on Sunday night (local time).
