  • Many residents of the Parisian nursing homes dependent on the city of Paris died from the coronavirus.
  • While the situation seems to be calming down a bit, certain agents begin to denounce the management of the crisis by the town hall.
  • The lack of staff and equipment is often pointed out. Complaints have been sent to the Paris prosecutor's office.

Emmanuel Grégoire counts the days. Not those who separate it from the deconfinement promised by Edouard Philippe. But those without having to deplore a death in an establishment for the elderly managed by the city of Paris. "At the Ehpad Garden plants, we are seven days without death," said, this Friday, the first deputy mayor of the capital, Anne Hidalgo.

Key figures (04/16) 🔍: ARS IDF counted 33,920 confirmed cases (+659). 13,006 hospitalized (-137) including 2,401 (-78) in intensive care. 4,359 (+190) deaths observed in hospitals and 3,185 deaths in ESMS (+165) Our thoughts are with their loved ones.

Evidence of the violence of the coronavirus wave on retirement homes. The proof also that that of the Jardin des Plantes, in the 5th arrondissement, was the one that suffered the most. According to a provisional report that 20 Minutes managed to obtain, about thirty of the 92 residents of this establishment died of the coronavirus, or more than 35%. Out of the 15 houses managed by the Social Action Center of the city of Paris, 132 elderly people died from the Covid-19. A quarter of the residents of Julie Siegfried house (14th arrondissement). About twenty percent of those of Annie Girardot (13th arrondissement)…

Bodies kept in covers for several days

"It hurts," says a nurse. As caregivers, we tell ourselves that we have not been up to the task… ”But after very complicated weeks, the situation seems to be subsiding at the very moment when the government proposes to authorize visits again. "It relaxes a little," confirms Emmanuel Grégoire. For example, the Samu resumes taking care of the elderly when they call. Which was not the case… ”Another positive sign: the assumption of responsibility of the bodies by the funeral directors improves.

As the Belgian television channel RTL revealed, the bodies of certain residents had to be kept in body bags on the beds for several days before the funeral home moved. In particular at the Ehpad Jardin des plantes. "The funeral services were under stress," recognizes Emmanuel Grégoire.

In Paris, at night, elderly and isolated people die alone at home. The number of deaths is such, at home or in #Ehpad, that it is sometimes necessary to wait two days before the arrival of the undertaker. @aur_rousseau @JeromeGuedj @micheledelaunay @DidierSapy

"We were told: 'You have the petoche, stay at home!' '"

After weeks of health crisis, the town hall of Paris continues to test all the residents of its establishments and hopes to obtain a precise count by the end of this week. But some do not have the patience. “We have the feeling of an opaque management of the crisis, denounces Christian Giovannangeli, secretary general of the Force Ouvrière at the Center for Social Action. It is very difficult to obtain figures. It's the omerta! "

Others don't care about the numbers. But have a bitter memory of the pressure. "The management told us text message" You have the petoche, stay at home! We only need the brave ... '' says a caregiver. How would you do with such a message? Result: some agents panicked at the idea of contracting the virus and infecting their relatives have deserted. "In my department, there are 14 of us on sick leave out of 16. Including me," recognizes another caregiver.

To deal with the situation, a call for volunteers was launched. "Fortunately, some have come," said a nurse, who also requested anonymity. But each new person must go through training. For each gesture, each thing, you have to show. Sometimes you wonder if you're saving time… ”

Tensions on masks and gowns

But, as in many other sectors, it was also and above all the management of equipment that sowed panic everywhere. "At first, only doctors were allowed to wear a mask," says an agent working at the Ehpad Jardin des plantes. The residents had to cascade for management to do something… ”

Our file on containment

On this point too, Emmanuel Grégoire recognizes that the management of the equipment has been complicated. “We clearly had a tension on the masks and overcoats. But like elsewhere ... ”Today, everything seems to be back to normal. The time has come to mourn the dead and take stock.

But some already want to take the next step: that of claiming accounts. According to our information, the Paris prosecutor's office has already received more than 25 complaints against Parisian nursing homes, private and public. The reasons ? Endangering the lives of others. And abstention from fighting a disaster.
