“We oppose this project and the agricultural model it induces, which fully participates in the industrialization of agriculture. Farming without peasants, ever more destructive of the environment for the sole benefit of large industrial groups ”. The words are strong but carefully chosen. On Saturday, a hundred people demonstrated in Guipry-Messac (Ille-et-Vilaine) against the project to enlarge a farm raising calves. Carried by the Cooperl, the Breton mastodon of breeding, the extension plans to increase to 800 calves, against 200 currently.

For almost two years, residents have opposed this expansion project, fearing the daily nuisance of this "calf factory". The extension request has been validated by the Ille-et-Vilaine prefecture. But not by the elected officials of the municipal council, whose opinion is only advisory. According to the collective of opponents La Puce, the mayor of the town has appealed against the prefecture's decision, in particular because of the presence of a manure pit very close to a house. The decision of the administrative tribunal has not yet been rendered.

In their fight, the residents received the support of the Confédération paysanne agricultural union. According to him, this expansion project "marks a new stage in the loss of autonomy of the peasants" and leans towards "always more industrialization of agriculture for always less income and peasants".

An abandoned project in the town

In the town, the mobilization of residents and the La Puce collective had already led to the abandonment of an amusement park project called Avalonys, which was to honor Arthurian legends. Another site was finally selected.
