SNCF expects to transport 1.2 million passengers on 2,500 trains between Friday and Sunday for the first weekend of the winter holidays, the company announced on Friday.

"For SNCF, these are five successive weekends of very heavy traffic in stations and on trains with, as a highlight, the big crossover from February 22 and 23," she added in a press release.

Zone C comes into play

Vacationers from Zone C (academies of Créteil, Montpellier, Paris, Toulouse and Versailles) open the ball on Friday evening, followed by those from Zone B, while those from Zone A will end their vacation on March 8.

During these five weekends, 340,000 travelers are expected on the links between Paris and the alpine valleys of Maurienne, Tarentaise, Chablais, Arve and the Southern Alps. These winter sports enthusiasts will travel aboard 800 TGV.

Lots of cars too

Some 40,000 unaccompanied children must also travel during the period. This service, Junior & Cie, had failed to be canceled during the Christmas holidays due to the strike against the pension reform project.

In total, between February 7 and March 8, the railway company intends to transport 12 million people on 27,000 trains (TGV, Ouigo and Intercités) and mobilized 1,000 red vests to inform travelers at the station.

The train will not be the only means used to go on vacation. Bison Futé plans a busy weekend on the roads, with very difficult traffic in Ile-de-France this Friday in the direction of departure, and difficult Saturday in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and in part of the Burgundy-Franche region -County. The rest of the traffic will be usual in the direction of departures and arrivals.
