Saoirse Ronan says that the first time a edition of Little Women fell into his hands was at 14 or 15 years . Set in times of the Civil War, the play recounts the lives of the four March sisters. Several years before entering these pages, the film version that Gillian Armstrong directed in 1994 and that earned Winona Ryder an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Jo March already gathered Ronan's entire family around the television on the day of Christmas. Now, the character forged by the writer Louisa M. Alcott in 1868 makes the same candidacy fall on Ronan, thanks to the new version directed by Greta Gerwig, with whom the actress has already worked on Lady Bird (2017), a film for which She was also nominated for an Oscar and with which she won her first Golden Globe.

As Gerwig herself describes, Jo's character struggles to fend for herself and be a writer at a time when the possibility of independence was rarely an option for women. Sensitive and creative, the bravest of the four March sisters stands out from stereotypes. Described as a young woman whose only beauty "was her hair", she does not hesitate to cut her hair to help her family with the money she gets from selling it. He fights to publish his texts, negotiates his rights and avoids the syrupy endings inside and outside his writings . This is demonstrated after rejecting his friend Laurie when he declares his love. Handsome, cultured and with money, the character that Timothée Chalamet gives life to is not, however, what Jo seeks.

-After a while, you will get over it and you will find a charming and cultured young woman who will adore you and will fulfill the role of lady in your fantastic house wonderfully-, Jo assures him after giving him pumpkins. I could not. I am unattractive, awkward . Rare and old , you would be ashamed of me, we would be fighting all day ... I would not be interested in high society and you would. And you would hate to write and I could not live without it, and we would be so unhappy that we wish we had never met ... And all that would be horrible!

Despite the numerous letters that Alcott received after the first part of Little Women was published in which readers asked that the two friends get married, the writer opposed the outcome they proposed. Finally, accepting the suggestions of its editor, Alcott consents that his character marries, but he does it with Professor Bhaer, several years older than her and economically weak. "The girls write to me to ask who the women will marry, as if marrying were the only objective and purpose of a woman," the author lamented in her diary. This same boredom that he feels translates him to his alter ego in fiction, sowing in Jo infinity of gestures, reactions and responses that could well have come from Alcott herself.

- Women must learn to be pleasant , especially those of us who are poor, because we have no other way of returning the favors they do to us. If you remember it and put it into practice, everyone will love you more than me, because you have so much more to offer-, says her little sister Amy at a time in the plot.

-I'm an old grumbler and I don't think I ever will be anymore. But I understand that you are right. It's just that it is easier for me to risk my life for someone than to be kind to a person when I don't get out of my heart. Having such deep feelings is a disgrace, don't you think? - Jo replies.

After offering herself to Gerwig to play the role, Ronan represents the freshest version of a character full of sensitivity and nuanced . A Jo who is not afraid of loneliness or the unknown. Nor, of course, fear of crying.

"Dear, why are you crying?" Asks Professor Bhaer.

-Why do you leave.
