The number of private drivers on speed cameras should soon be increased everywhere in France - Nicolas TUCAT / AFP

After a test phase conducted since April 2018 in Normandy, private speed camera cars will now circulate in other regions of France. Sixty new unmarked vehicles will soon be deployed in the Brittany, Pays de la Loire and Center Val de Loire regions, reports BFMTV this Thursday.

These Peugeot 308 and Ford Focus will not be driven by law enforcement agents but by private drivers hired by the Norman company Mobiom. Once put into circulation, these equipped cars will detect the speeding of other motorists without emitting a flash. Their route will be determined by the prefecture.

All this "because of the power of cars today". We know what remains to be done so for less speed cameras on the road, let's limit the weight and power of the cars ... https://t.co/lx4MrHXaK1

Soon four other regions concerned

"This system has allowed us to make these cars (...) run about 5 hours a day," said Emmanuel Barbe, inter-ministerial delegate for road safety, on RMC. "It forces [motorists] to be more careful [s]," he added.

The specialized magazine AutoPlus announces that these private speed cameras could quickly be deployed in other regions in 2020. Hauts-de-France, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Franche-Comté and the Grand-Est region are affected.
