Six years ago, things were very different in the biggest entertainment factory in the world. Disney had just bought Marvel and LucasFilm, but there was still a long way to go before the blockbusters of both franchises arrived. In addition, if we talk about animation, which was the reason for being the company's original, the subsidiary Pixar worked better in the reviews. But, without anyone waiting for it, 'Frozen' arrived and everything changed. The film made 1,200 million euros worldwide and its soundtrack was the best-selling album of 2014. Now, when Disney's domain is overwhelming compared to other companies in the sector, comes 'Frozen 2', which opens this Friday.

Peter del Vecho, producer and maker of that bombing, looks back. "As a study, Disney was getting stronger, it could be felt in 'Tangled' (2011), 'Rompe Ralph' (2012) and, finally, in 'Frozen'," he explains. "We knew we had a good movie, but nobody in the studio, not even the directors, could predict the phenomenon it would end up becoming." Even today, he does not know exactly the reasons for that: "We had characters that were credible and close, and music also played a very important role. But I would say it was as if people discovered this story and made it their own. In that 'Frozen' was unique. "

There was also the story. Elsa and Ana, the protagonists, are two sisters: the second falls in love with a prince who ends up being the bad guy and the first does not know a man or interest him, which made some see her as a lesbian and feminist heroine. Del Vecho throws balls outside, but not far away: "In 'Frozen', we took many conventions from fairy tales and turned them around. For example, with love at first sight. But always respectfully, without laughing at they". 'Frozen 2' "has more surprises. It is more a mystery that is revealed, although it is connected to the first film."

In this second part, "the environment is another character," emphasizes the producer. "In this case we talk about autumn, which we think fit the process of learning and growth of the characters. Also, as this is a journey through an enchanted forest, it made sense to set it at this time of year." Thus, its objective is to try to "create a credible, but not necessarily realistic, world. Evoke a feeling that transports the public to a special space."

But for success to be repeated, the music must be reconnected. "We have the same team as in the first one working in the same way: making songs that let history speak, but also make it move forward," said Del Vecho. "I think the songs are more mature, in the same way that the characters have grown. It is similar to when you write a musical: the first film was the first act and this is the second, in which the story becomes deeper and emotional ". Six years ago, "the songs became popular because people watched the movie several times and began to buy the album, which came to life on its own. I am sure that the same will happen with this music."

In any case, what seems clear is that Disney continues to maintain a better balance than anyone between creativity and business. "As filmmakers," Del Vecho explains, "it is crucial for us to make sure that we are telling universal stories that people can identify with. And that they are timely but also eternal. And always do it focused on the creative process. The rest comes only, when you already have a product that you can be proud of. "
