When the song was released it quickly became controversial. The text line "I know you want it" was criticized for being misogyny and for calling for rape.

Pharrell Williams has previously defended the song lyrics, but now six years later has understood that the language used in the song is also used by men "when they exploit a woman".

“And it doesn't matter that I don't behave like that, or think so. The only thing that matters is the consequences it has for women, ”says Pharrell Williams according to The Guardian.

The artist also claims to have realized that he "lives in a male chauvinist culture" and that he had not previously understood that some of his songs contributed to it.

"So it amazed me," he says according to The Guardian.
