The 4x4 had just passed the Masnaa border crossing in eastern Lebanon and was in Syrian territory when a first missile, fired by a drone, landed near the vehicle. The occupants had time to take shelter before the target was destroyed by a second projectile.
According to concordant sources, the all-terrain vehicle transported a cadre and several Hezbollah members from Lebanon to Syria, where the Shiite party deploys several thousand fighters alongside the Syrian army.
The attack was not claimed, and Hezbollah was content to take up the version of the official Syrian media, which reported that a "civilian vehicle" was destroyed by a missile. But the procedure is reminiscent of that of the Israeli army, which regularly conducts air raids against Hezbollah targets in Syria.
Wednesday's strike was preceded this week by an incessant 48-hour overflight of Beirut and its southern suburbs, a stronghold of Hezbollah, by Israeli drones.
On April 4, a Hezbollah official, Ali Younès, in charge of the foreign agents and spies file, was assassinated on a road in southern Lebanon, in unclear circumstances. His body, riddled with bullets and stabs, was found in his car on the side of a road.
