It is at least the fourth fatal attack this week: According to the military, Israel's air force targeted a vehicle in neighboring Lebanon, killing an important commander of the anti-tank unit of the Shiite militia Hezbollah.

He had considerable knowledge of anti-tank missiles and was responsible for dozens of attacks on Israeli civilians, communities and security forces, the army said on Sunday. The information could not initially be independently verified.

Since the beginning of the Gaza war after the massacre by Hamas and other extremist groups in Israel on October 7th, there have been daily, sometimes deadly, confrontations between Israel's armed forces and militant groups such as Hezbollah.

According to Israeli information, there were again rocket attacks from Lebanon on Israeli border towns on Sunday. A soldier was injured. The military then attacked targets in southern Lebanon. It's the bloody end to a bloody week:

  • On Friday, Israel's military apparently sent a drone to Lebanon and killed Ali Abed Akhsan Naim in the Basuriye area. The senior Hezbollah cadre is said to have been responsible for attacks on Israeli civilians.

  • Also on Friday, Israeli fighter jets - presumably - carried out a heavy air strike on Syrian territory; Hezbollah militiamen are said to have been among the dozens dead and more than 100 injured.

  • There were also clashes between Hezbollah and Israel on Thursday. Lebanese groups reported 15 dead after air strikes, Israel reported one civilian dead after shelling.

Bystanders were also killed this week in the war of attrition between Israel and Hezbollah, which has been simmering for more than six months: three UN observers were injured in an explosion in Lebanon on Friday. The group was on foot patrol along the Blue Line – the border with Israel. Unifil says it is investigating the origin of the explosion - so far without success.
