Liverpool faced Benfica away on Tuesday in the first quarter-final meeting at Estádio da Luz in the Champions League. Liverpool went in as big favorites and were the hotter team in the first half where the English could go to the break with a two-goal lead.

But Benfica would not give up.

Four minutes into the second half, Liverpool's Konaté failed to clear an entry, Darwin Nunez took the opportunity and shook life in the match.

1-2 and Estádio da Luz lifted.

"Benfica were close to equalizing"

Benfica then continued to threaten for an equalizer and were close several times.

In the 67th minute, Nunez again entered the penalty area and fell into a duel with Virgil van Dijk.

The striker called for a penalty, but was not heard from referee Jesús Gil Manzano.

Liverpool then closed the match after Luis Díaz got a nice ball from Naby Keita and was able to round Benfica's goalkeeper and put 3-1 which was also the final result.

In Tuesday's second quarter final, Manchester City faced Atletico Madrid.

A City that had 17 straight Champions League matches at home without a loss.

The home team dominated the match as expected and had a ball possession of 70 percent, but despite that City did not manage to create a really dangerous goal chance.

But in the 70th minute of the match, Phil Foden had the chance to free-kick Kevin De Bruyne who put 1-0 in the far post - which was also the end result.

Now thriller matches await next week on Wednesday.
