Smoke, it seemed, wanted to show cars the right way in Ashwaubenon, a 16,000-inhabitant city. Every day he walked on a four-lane road and danced there - without fear of being run over. Sometimes he also chased schoolchildren on their way home on their bikes.
Smoke also got in touch with the locals, babbling something to them, as he wanted to smalltalk with them, as the "Washington Post" reported. About the weather maybe or the latest cars of the city dwellers. Little by little, Smoke became more and more popular in the city due to his actions in social life.
For months, nobody managed to put the animal in its place, because not everyone was happy about its behavior. Some citizens had meanwhile complained about the turkey, they were afraid that he would become overbearing. But Smoke even ran around car police without worrying about it, but did not catch himself.
Someone eventually founded a Facebook group called "Smoked Turkey - Mayor of Ashwaubenon", which has already added 2457 users. The people appointed Smoke almost the honorary mayor of the city. His fame was growing, some residents were printing extra T-shirts: "I stood with Mayor Smoke Ashwaubenon 2018", which means "I'm to Mayor Smoke."
Now the police hope that Smoke will gradually move on by itself. Maybe when it gets colder and Smoke is looking for a warmer place to eat. Maybe he is so clever and he disappears shortly before an important festival, which means an end in the oven for many turkeys: Thanksgiving.
