There is hardly a safer place to drink: Two stories below the surface, in an old bank vault is the "Jigger & Spoon". The Stuttgart bar won the title "New Bar of the Year" for 2019 at the Mixology Bar Awards in Berlin on Sunday. Germany's "Bar of the Year" became the "Velvet" in Berlin-Neukölln. As the Swiss "Bar of the Year", "Werk 8" in Basel and Austria's "Bar of the Year" were once again named the bar of the Hotel Englhof in Zell am Ziller.

Altogether there were 17 categories at the award ceremony. A bar even got two prizes: The "Provocateur Bar" of the Provocateur Hotel in Berlin-Wilmersdorf was named "Hotel Bar of the Year" and also received the award for the "Barteam of the Year". The awards went to Berlin for the "Bar menu of the year" ("Bar am Steinplatz" in Charlottenburg) and the "Mixologist of the Year" (Oliver Ebert from the bar "Beckett's Head" in Prenzlauer Berg). Ebert already won in 2013 in this category.

"After a certain dry spell, Berlin has come back with five awards this year," said Helmut Adam. He is the publisher of the magazine "Mixology - Magazine for Bar Culture", which has awarded the prize for the twelfth time. The bi-monthly print magazine and the "mixology.eu" portal deal with fluid trends and interesting facts from the world of the counters.

"Best European Bar" in London

Awards also went to Bavaria: "Newcomer of the Year" is Sven Goller from the bar "The Black Sheep" in the Upper Franconian Bamberg, "host of the year" was Kostas Ignatiadis from the famous bar "Schumann's" in Munich. The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Fatih Akerdem, who has been the bar manager of The Westin Grand Frankfurt for 28 years as a bar manager.

For the second time in a row, the "Best European Bar" was the "American Bar" at the Savoy Hotel in London, recently headed by the German barman Maxim Schulte. "Best New European Bar" became the "Two Jewelery" in Barcelona.
