Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, 56 : The longtime Prime Minister of Saarland is the candidate for both parties to the party presidency. As the confidant of the incumbent, she intends to continue Merkel's center-stage, at the same time livening up the party's debates and setting her own course. Kramp-Karrenbauer showed how this can be done with her proposal to prevent delinquent asylum seekers from re-entering the Schengen area in future, or to express skeptical remarks on marriage for all. Kramp-Karrenbauer is not a mini-Merkel, she says. The mother of three children wants to score with her experience as head of government and minister in various departments - and as a successful campaigner: The last CDU result just over the 40-percent mark brought them in March 2017 in Saarland.
