For the second day in a row, stormy winds have caused significant problems in ferry traffic in the Aegean and Ionian Seas. Almost all ferries that make connections between the Greek mainland and the islands remained in the ports.

Hundreds of trees collapsed, schools remained closed on numerous islands. In places, the gusts reached the wind force ten out of twelve, reported the State Radio (ERT).

Meteorologists said that a kind of hurricane has formed between Sicily and the Greek peninsula of Peloponnese and is slowly moving eastwards. In the next two days, winds of magnitude twelve are expected.

The so-called Medicanes (Mediterranean Hurricanes) are tropical storm-like phenomena that are rarely registered in the eastern Mediterranean, said meteorologists on state television. With a weather improvement is expected from Sunday.
