Parts of Frankfurt's city center were evacuated in the morning to make harmless a world warblind found in the Main. The 250-kilogram American aircraft bomb had been discovered on Tuesday during a practice diving of the fire department.

Now the dud was blown up: After a loud detonation, a meter high water fountain was created. Divers then checked whether the US dud had actually been destroyed. "It was confirmed that the bomb is no longer a threat," said a police spokesman.

About 600 people had been asked from 8 o'clock to leave their homes for safety reasons. Affected were parts of the old town with the Frankfurt Cathedral, but also the opposite bank of the Main.
