"Happiness is on its way," Aljona Savchenko wrote on Facebook on Tuesday. In the accompanying photo, she is seen with her husband, the artist Liam Cross - and there is little doubt what is meant by the "happiness": The athlete has put both hands on her stomach, while Cross with a surprised look on she shows.
Savchenko seems to be pregnant. "It's so exciting to meet this little person who's half of me and half of who I love," she continues. Also, the expectant father was enthusiastic in the comments to the photo: "I'm gonna be a Dadddddy !!!", he wrote.
It is still unclear when the child is expected to be born and whether it will be a girl or a boy. 35-year-old Savchenko has been married to British Cross since 2016.
After winning the gold medal at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, Savchenko and her partner Bruno Massot only participated in the World Championships that followed shortly thereafter and then said goodbye to a competition break.
In March, the German Skating Union (DEU) had announced that they would talk to the two about their future plans. The native Ukrainian and the Frenchman are employed as sports soldiers in the Bundeswehr. However, the DEU did not have much hope that the dream couple together will once again start training for the Olympics 2022 in Beijing.
Massot also recently became a father. At the beginning of October, his son Louka was born in Switzerland.
